A BRAND new city centre artwork by professional Coventry artist and illustrator Matt Chu will begin early this week in Pepper Lane.
At One with Cofa’s Tree draws on elements of Coventry’s past, present and future fusing the artists’ psychedelic art style into a large scale mural.
Matt’s work ranges from film posters including Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira (1988) to prints of actors and music icons such as Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune (2020) and Bjork (pictured).
The walls of the Cathedral Lanes development facing on to Pepper Lane will be painted in various pastel colours to tie-in with the coming artwork.
The sequence of colours was chosen by Matt, who lives in Binley Woods, in order of colour temperature from warm to cold.
Later in the spring, an installation of living walls with plants and greenery is also set to be installed to separate the colour sequence.
Coun David Welsh, cabinet member for housing and communities, said: “This is another brilliant piece of artwork to install in Coventry city centre – and it’s especially brilliant to be able to work with Matt on this design, showcasing just how much creativity we have here in the city.
“I can’t wait to see Matt’s design up on the wall.”
Coun Patricia Hetherton, said: “This walkway will look really beautiful when it’s all finished. The living walls, which contain plants and greenery, will be particularly wonderful as they incorporate greenery into places which wouldn’t usually have it.”
And coun Jim O’Boyle, said: “There has already been improvement work in Pepper Lane with the repaving, which will create a much nicer walkway to and from Coventry Cathedral to Broadgate for people.”
“Our plan for the city centre was to make the best of the old and the best of the new, with a brighter, greener and more inviting city centre – and this project does just that.”
