THE DAIMLER Powerhouse – which has undergone a £2.5million revamp – will officially open its doors over the bank holiday weekend with a special free event.
The Brightest Moon – building tours and marvellous machines – will take place between midday and 4pm from next Saturday to Monday, August 28 to 30.
Outside and inside Daimler, Imagineer present The Brightest Moon by Midlands based artist Jean Baynham – a new large-scale interactive art commission which reflects the historical significance of Daimler on the night of The Coventry Blitz, and looks forward to its future as a Creation Centre.
The six-metre woven moon, installed on the vertical dance wall and created by community members from across Coventry, will provide the inspiration for a collaborative performance specially commissioned for the weekend featuring local performers and musicians.
On the evening of August 28 and 29, visitors can join Imagineer for two special performances at 7pm and 9pm, choreographed by Louis Lewinson and Luka Owen, along with live music and short performances from Open Theatre. Whilst these performances are free booking is required.
Other Saturday and Sunday highlights see people able to visit The Nest, created by Talking Birds, which features art, there is the chance to take part in art marking and follow the Walk With Me sound walk along the towpath.
Visitors can find out about the site’s history with the interactive 1932 Lanchester car – the first model to be designed and built at Daimler Works and watch the premiere of Pangaea Sculptors’ Centre’s new short film exploring connections between hand, earth and gesture accompanied by a live drumming performance.
Traces, a new outdoor performance, will be given by Louis Lewinson, along with aerial antics from Rebel Manifesto and relaxing Live Lounges with Coventry-based musicians, hosted by Media Mania.
Highly Sprung’s CastAway will be a stunning outdoor performance featuring their unique gyroscopic flying machine and the impact waterways had on society can be explored at the Canal Basin.
On the Monday, between midday and 4pm, visitors can get hands on experience of the marvellous machines which demonstrate what is possible when art and engineering come together.
People can also take a ride on Venture – Imagineer’s performance Carousel – and step inside Daimler Powerhouse to find out more about projects in the pipeline like Bridge2Bamboo, FLOW and Jack’s Frogs. Media Mania can be joined in the recording studio and exhibitions tell the stories of the resident companies and Daimler’s transformation.
