City charity buzzing as Wasps donate clothing for Afghan refugees resettling in Coventry

WASPS is the latest organisation to respond to a Coventry charity’s appeal for unwanted and unused clothes.

The team has donated a range of brand new clothing and merchandise it no longer needs after updating its logo to bring all elements of the club under one barrier.

The stock – including t-shirts, jumpers and tracksuit bottoms – is with Carriers of Hope, which provides items to incoming Afghan refugees.

Coventry City Council deputy leader, Coun Abdul Salam Khan, applauded the united effort shown by local organisations in response to the Afghanistan crisis.

He said: “Coventry’s foundations are firmly rooted in our ability to collectively support one another – and strangers – in both times of peace and peril.

“With Coventry’s businesses unifying in support of Afghan arrivals, it signals to the rest of the country that Coventry remains steadfast in its commitment and will continue to lead the way in supporting those who face life-threatening circumstances.”

Déirdre Fitzhugh, director of Wasps Community Foundation, said the organisation had a long-established history of using the power of sport to create and deliver positive change within local communities.

“As a club, we’re incredibly proud to be supporting the Afghan nationals that have given up so much in pursuit of peace and a better life.”

Sue Sampson, CEO of Carriers of Hope, said she was ‘absolutely overwhelmed’ by all the support received by Coventry residents, Wasps and other organisations.
