COVENTRY City’s seven-game unbeaten run at home came to an end after they were beaten 2-1 by Swansea City – suffering their first league defeat at the CBS Arena since returning to their home city this season.
The Sky Blues shipped two early goals after Jamie Paterson struck on five minutes before Joel Piroe’s deflected effort increased Swansea’s lead in the 12th minute.
City defender Kyle McFadzean halved the deficit from a corner on 27 minutes but Coventry were unable to find an equaliser as their excellent home record took a blow on Tuesday night.
Despite the defeat – Coventry remain in fourth place in the Sky Bet Championship table, three points clear of the teams outside of the play-off places.
Swansea made a blistering start and took the lead when Jake Clarke-Salter’s poor clearance fell straight to Paterson who finished into the bottom right corner despite Simon Moore getting his fingertips to the shot.
Swans captain Matt Grimes then curled a free-kick inches wide of the post from 25-yards out as the away side threatened to quickly double their advantage.
And the Swans soon had their second when Piroe’s shot deflected into the corner off of the unfortunate Dom Hyam after McFadzean had wiped out Ethan Laird in the box.
Coventry responded when McFadzean powered home Gus Hamer’s floated corner from the right past Swansea keeper Ben Hamer.
The visitors had one final chance to add to their lead before the break when Paterson’s shot was superbly deflected over by Jamie Allen who slid in at full stretch.
Swansea continued to cause problems for Mark Robins’ side when a corner from the right was headed against the bar by Jake Bidwell from four-yards out.
The Sky Blues then had a chance to equalise from an identical situation to the goal as Hamer’s corner was once again met by McFadzean only to this time send his effort wide of the target.
City almost snatched a point late on when Fankaty Dabo let fly with his left foot from 20-yards out only for Swansea keeper Hamer to tip the ball over the bar.
Coventry are next in action on Saturday, November 6 when they host Bristol City with kick-off at the CBS Arena at 3pm.
