THESE pictures – released by National Highways – show the giant steel beams which have been put in place for the £61million flyover on the A46 at Binley.

Specialist teams carried out the work over two weekends in December using a 750-tonne crane to lift 32 beams which had a combined weight of 720 tonnes.

They were then dropped into place.

The scheme is part of a congestion-busting upgrade to alleviate queues for drivers.

Drivers staying on the A46 will not need to slow down for the roundabout which should improve traffic flow for businesses nearby.

National Highways Project Manager, Bryan Bradley said: “These new aerial images show the sheer scale of the giant beams that form an integral part of the new flyover at Binley.

“We planned this work methodically given the scale of the task involved and the beams were lowered into place using specialist equipment.

“This is a major milestone in the project and motorists can now see the new flyover starting to take shape.”

He added good progress was being made and, once complete, the scheme would alleviate congestion at a well-known bottleneck on the A46.”

The work began last year, is due to be completed in the spring and the structure will improve existing footways for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as the road for drivers.
