TWO BLUE plaques and a memorial tree have been unveiled by the Lord Mayor of Coventry, Coun John McNicholas, at Henry VIII Preparatory School to commemorate notable residents.

One of the plaques hailed Ernest Instone, the former chief engineer at Daimler, who lived at Swallows before it became a prep school and the second was for former headmasters Swallows, Phipps and Sykes.

The unique historic event was attended by former pupils and staff of the school, along with former students and Tony Merrygold from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust and Peter Walters, Chairman of The Coventry Society.

BKHS King Henry VIII Preparatory headteacher Caroline Soane said: “It was a tremendous privilege to celebrate the heritage of the Swallows site.

“Listening to former pupils talking about their time at the school was heart-warming and although times change, there were many parallels to learning and education then and now.”
