COVENTRY GODIVA HARRIERS athlete Jake Minshull won gold to become the under-20 800 metre champion at the England Athletics Age Group Indoor Championships in Sheffield.
Minshull set an indoor personal best time (1:52.89) as he powered away from the rest of the field in the final 400 metres to become champion in his first year as an under-20’s runner.
That came after Minshull won his heat, setting an initial PB (1:54.52) to qualify third fastest for the final in a field of six runners.
And Minshull showed his class in the final, running in lane six, to win by over a second despite three other runners achieving PB’s.
Elsewhere, Godiva’s Stephen Baffour came home sixth in the under-20 men’s 60 metres final after setting a PB of 6.89 seconds in the semi-finals having won his heat.
Naomi Jones placed ninth in the under-17 girl’s long jump final with a 5.20 metre effort, 22 centimetres outside of the medal positions.
And Grace Evans and Eva Cassidy both qualified for the semi-finals of the under-17 girl’s 60 metre hurdles with the former placing sixth in a PB time of 9.18 seconds whilst the latter was unable to finish.
Monica Davidson missed out on a place in the under-17 girls’ 300 metre final by nine hundredths of a second, coming home third in a time of 41.65 seconds in her semi-final.
Daniella Bleach (25.78 seconds) and Kobi Jones (7.47 seconds) both ran PB times but were unable to progress to the final of the under-17 girls’ 200 metres and under-20 men’s 60 metres respectively.
Lastly, Ramadan Noah finished seventh in 7.31 seconds in the semi-final of the under-17 boy’s 60 metre race.
