COVENTRY people in crisis can now receive more food more often thanks to Tesco donating a free delivery van to Coventry Foodbank.
During the pandemic, the foodbank saw a 20% increase in the number of people needing help and the new van will provide invaluable support in meeting the demand across the city.
The donation took place at the Coventry Cross Point Extra Store last Friday.
The ex-Tesco fleet van was previously used for home deliveries and is well-equipped to transport large amounts of donated food, it will reduce the amount of time volunteers spend driving to collect and distribute food.
Dee Ward, Coventry Foodbank project manager, anticipates 2022 will be just as busy.
“We are truly grateful to Tesco for this generous donation. The new food van will enable us to transport more food to people in need throughout Coventry and the surrounding area.
“The van is well equipped and will ensure we keep the food safe and fresh when making our deliveries.”
The charity is also a beneficiary of Tesco’s Community Food Connection scheme, run through FareShare, meaning it regularly collects surplus food from the supermarket’s Coventry stores to help with its work.
Amanda Woods, Store Manager at Coventry Cross Point Extra said: “We have worked with Coventry Foodbank for some time through our Community Food Connection Scheme.
“Because we know Dee and the team, when we heard there was a van available, they were the obvious choice and I’m delighted that we’re able to do this to support the people of Coventry.”
