HUNDREDS of clay flowers created by Coventry College creative arts students have been featured in an experimental exhibition in the city.
The flowers were crafted in collaboration with the Pangaea Sculpture team as part of ‘Hand Earth Gesture Return’, a sustainable art project in the Canal Basin.
Thousands of flower pieces have been made to form part of the temporary exhibition, which saw artists from Britain and India collaborate with people from Coventry using natural materials such as clay, straw and water.
Organisations taking part in the project included local schools, Sitting Rooms of Culture, Coventry Peace Orchard, Imagineer Production’s Monday-night makers and the Krishna Mandhir Temple.
‘Hand Earth Gesture Return’ turned natural earth processes into performances and interactive events including drum showcases and clay flower workshops.
There was also a ‘water ritual’ which started the natural erosion process to return materials used in the project back to the earth.
Creative Arts Curriculum Leader Nicola Holloway said: “The student outcomes were fantastic, and they had a lot of fun along the way.
“They certainly rose to the challenge of creating these intricate flower pieces.
“It has been a fantastic opportunity to work with the Pangaea Sculpture Centre and as a department, we hope to develop and expand these links.”
