Golfers club together for £12k hospice fund-raiser

A CHARITY golf day in Coventry has raised more than £12,000 for Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice.

A total of 18 teams took part in the event with the cash going to the charity to help it treat babies and young children with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses.

There are 29 families currently relying on services at the hospice.

Contesting the fundraiser were a variety of corporate, social and members teams with the Bablake Old Boys’ Cricket Club winning the tournament overall.

Alongside the golf there was an auction where prizes included a five-star break in southern Spain with three rounds of golf at La Finca and a two-night stay at Carnoustie Golf Hotel and Spa in Scotland.

Other prizes included a four-ball event and overnight stay at any Marriott Hotel and golf course – three of those achieved bids of £650 each and there was also a two-night stay at Carnoustie Golf Hotel and Spa in Scotland with three of those going for £800 each.

Martin Sutcliff, a member of Zoe’s Place business group and head PGA professional at Coventry Golf Club, highlighted the success of the event and the demand for another one next year with June 29 already penciled in as the proposed date.

He said: “Coventry Golf Club too was delighted to support Zoe’s Place and offered the course free of charge, so the money to enter the teams went straight to the charity.

“To raise £12,194 is just amazing and far exceeded our expectations.

“We look forward to seeing the players again next year and indeed long into the future when hopefully we’ll raise even more.”

Coventry Golf Club, founded in 1887, is the oldest golf club in city and has one of the best courses in Warwickshire, growing in popularity each year.

The three charity golf days held so far have amounted to almost £30,000 for Zoe’s Place.
