BOWLS - Warwickshire Women compete at County Finals Weekend

Coventry Editorial 25th Aug, 2022   0

TEMPERATURES soared to 40ºC as Warwickshire Women headed to Stratford Bowling Club for the County Finals Weekend, writes Jenny Corn.

Starting the weekend was the Pairs between Jean Lythall and Wendy Holloway (Welford) playing Lily-Mae Adams and Emily Kernick (Sherwood Park).

First blood went to the Sherwood Park team as they soared to a 13-1 lead at 7 ends but the Welford pair were having none of it and pulled back over the next four ends to 13-10 but, despite this, Sherwood Park were able to again take control and eventually won 23-14.

The Triples was between Caroline Edwards, Anita Cowdrill and Tracey Turner-Smith (Royal Leamington Spa) playing Jacqui Ashley, Chris Hurst and Mary Wheildon (Warwick Boat Club).

And the teams were fairly evenly matched for most of the game 11 all on 11 ends when WBC started to pull away and led 16-11 at the 13th end but RLS were having none of it and managed to turn the tables to win 20-18.

The Benevolent Triples was between Dawn Horne, Jenny Wickens and Janice White (Royal Leamington Spa) and Wendy Hobbis, Tracy Wheeler and Jane Chedgzoy (Welford).

And the RLS team started strongly and although the Welford team pulled back in the middle of the game it wasn’t enough to stop RLS winning 22-10.

In the afternoon it was the chance for the Singles players to shine with Emily Kernick (Sherwood Park) playing Ros Taylor (Avenue Coventry) in the Championship 4 Wood Singles but although Ros Taylor started well Emily was more determined and went on to win 21-3.

The 2 wood Singles was between Lisa Smith (Welford) and Jenny Corn (Lillington) but although Jenny started well, Lisa soon pulled ahead leaving her opponent trailing 11-6 at 6 ends before managing to pull back by the 16th end to 11 all. Jenny then went on to take the next four ends to win 16-12.

The Champion of Champions was between Dawn Horne (Royal Leamington Spa) and Kirsty Richards (Whitnash).

Dawn started strongly and was 8-0 up before Kirsty won her first point, but having started she wasn’t going to be stopped and Kirsty went on to win 21-10.

The Junior Singles was between Lily-Mae Adams (Sherwood Park) and Hannah Smith (Welford).

Lily-Mae set off at a pace and was 10-0 before Hannah had a look in and managed to pull back but not enough to take the lead, leaving Lily-Mae to take the trophy 21-7.

The County Unbadged Singles was between Becky Lever (Rugby Thornfield) and Judy Waite (Stoke).

They were fairly evenly matched before Becky started to take the lead and was 18-15 at 15 ends, but Judy was determined it wasn’t a walk over and pulled back to 18-15 before losing 3 shots to leave Becky with the win 21-15.

Sunday was another hot sunny day featuring the Fours in the morning and the Pairs in the afternoon.

The Fours was between Margaret Grosvenor, Pippa Mace, Jayne Henfrey and Jenny Corn (Lillington) and Lily-Mae Adams, Joy Cooke, Vivienne Belt and Gill Maund (Sherwood Park).

And the teams proved to be evenly matched with Lillington just leading by one shot at 10 ends – 9-8, before taking 5 shots on the 11th end.

However, Sherwood Park pulled back to 15 all going into the last end when 3 shots on the 18th gave them the win 18-15.

The afternoon featured the Junior Pairs between Ellie Hurst (Warwick Boat Club) with Hannah Smith (Welford) and Lily-Mae Adams with Emily Kernick (both Sherwood Park).

Again they were fairly evenly matched with Ellie and Hannah leading by one shot at 10 ends – 11-10, but Lily-Mae and Emily pulled back to win by just 1 shot on the 18th -15-16.
