Artistic response to pride flag to be exhibited at Coventry Cathedral

Coventry Editorial 25th Feb, 2023   0

AN ARTISTIC response to the Pride flag will be exhibited in Coventry Cathedral’s Chapel of Industry to mark the last week of LGBTQ+ History Month.

The piece was created by members of the cathedral’s LGBTQIA+ community project Spectrum and will be displayed from February 25 until March 4.

The project welcomes the LGBTQIA+ community into the cathedral, creating a space for their stories to be heard and held.

During workshops over six weekends, those taking part discussed their experiences of identifying as LGBTQIA+, and these discussions helped to inform the design of the reimagined Pride flag.

Artist Andi Walker helped to run the workshops and a member of the clergy joined Spectrum throughout the process to listen to and support the members.

The flag design was inspired by the Cathedral’s stained-glass windows and wooden thorns, as well as religious saints, historical and contemporary LGBTQIA+ figures and symbols that have been adopted by the community.

The display will be free to view and accompanied by information on the creative process which led to the reimagined flag being created.

Andi Walker said: “I always feel privileged when people share their stories with me and everyone who came was very generous and honest with their stories, so I would like to thank everyone who participated in the event.”
