Coventry Council open to flying the ‘city’s flag’ as the Sky Blues reach the playoffs

THE City Council has said it is open to ideas of ways to support Coventry City after a call was made to fly the ‘city’s flag’ at the council house to mark the Sky Blues reaching the championship playoffs.

Coventry are potentially three games away from returning to the Premier League for the first time since 2001.

They play Middlesbrough at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Sunday (May 14) in the playoff semi-final first leg, with the winners facing either Luton Town or Sunderland at Wembley on May 27.

On Tuesday evening, Coventry conservatives leader Gary Ridley called for the city’s flag, chosen by Coventrians in 2018, to be flown at the council house until the end of the Sky Blues campaign.

Coun Ridley said: “I was 21 when the Sky Blues dropped out of the Premier League.

“Until that point, nobody doubted the top flight was our rightful place. In the intervening years, there have been some difficult moments. So, make no mistake this is a momentous occasion and it’s right that the Council show their support.

“So, I’ve written to the Lord Mayor Coun Kevin Maton and the Leader of the Council Coun George Duggins to request the flag be flown at the Council House.”

A city council spokesperson said: “The on-field success of Coventry City Football Club has been wonderful for the city and we are open to ways and ideas of supporting the team to celebrate the fantastic achievement of making this Sunday’s Championship play-offs.”
