UNIVERSITY Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust researchers have recruited the UK’s first patient to take part in a study testing a new drug to treat Crohn’s disease.

The INTREPID study will see those with the condition trial the impact of the new brazikumab drug.

Crohn’s disease sees parts of the digestive system becoming inflamed, with current Biologic drugs used to improve the lives of patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

Biologic drugs target parts of the immune system to treat disease but gradually lose effect for some patients who then need to be prescribed more medication.

This new test, which will run at 13 other NHS Trusts around the UK between now and March 2027, is part of a search for new biologic drugs.

Prof Matthew Brookes, clinical director of the NIHR Clinical Research Network West Midlands, said this was an ‘important study’ and congratulated the UHCW team for becoming the first to recruit a patient.
