A COVENTRY charity shop which has raised over £48,000 to support marginalised children across the world is celebrating after reopening following an extensive refurbishment.

Global Care’s staff and volunteers gathered last Friday to celebrate the reopening of their newly refurbished shop on Radford Road.

Coventry Lord Mayor Coun Jaswant Singh Birdi and Global Care’s Patron Fiona Castle were also at the big re-opening.

Trevor Matthews, who has been volunteering at the shop for over ten years, was gifted a special ambassador’s award.

The charity was started by Ron Newby from Earlsdon as a small child sponsorship scheme because he was determined to help abandoned children he had met on a recent visit to post-conflict Uganda.

Unable to interest existing charities, Ron, who died in 2008, decided to help the youngsters himself.

It is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

Coun Birdi said: “Global Care does amazing work supporting vulnerable children around the world.

“It is thanks to the volunteers and to shops like this one, that this work can be done.

“I think all the staff and volunteers are doing an excellent job.”
