FIVE people were arrested as part of an ANPR operation in Bedworth yesterday (July 27).

The mobile ANPR effort on Newtown Road stopped 80 vehicles, with 10 per cent being seized and one-fifth issued a ticket.

A 37-year-old man from Wolverhampton was caught by the ANPR camera for driving without insurance, and it was later revealed he was wanted by Leicestershire Police for failure to appear in court for burglary charges.

Ryan Hill, aged 30 and from Nuneaton, was charged with possession of cannabis following an arrest from the same operation.

The vehicle in which Hill was reportedly a passenger was stopped by officers for allegedly smelling of the drug.

He was alleged to have started rolling a cigarette containing what was believed to be cannabis during the search of the vehicle.

Hill will appear in Warwickshire Magistrates Court on August 18.

Two stolen motorbikes were also recovered and 16 traffic offence reports were issued.

Four stop-and-searches were carried out, three unsafe vehicles were prohibited and two window tints were removed.

The operation is the first part of a larger ANPR effort in Nuneaton and Bedworth over the coming months.

Police will use static and mobile cameras to identify and stop suspect vehicles in problem areas.
