There’s nothing to dampen the spirits of a football club’s fanbase than to be relegated from the Premier League.
Going from a position among the elite to battling it out in the lion’s den that is the Championship represents a massive fall from grace, and it usually takes a huge effort for a team to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
Leeds United, Southampton and Leicester City are the three clubs readjusting to life in the Championship this season, and all three will be aiming to get straight back into the Premier League.
The Championship betting odds have all three as contenders for promotion, but which of the sides are most likely to ascend back to England’s top tier.
Let’s take a look at the respective chances of each of these three clubs, and try and predict who has the best opportunity to make their Championship stay a short one.
Leeds United
It’s been a bit of a bumpy landing for Leeds. Despite the appointment of Daniel Farke as manager, there has been a notable lack of activity in the transfer market, leading to some sections of Leeds’ fanbase beginning to get nervous.
The arrivals of Ethan Ampadu, Karl Darlow, Sam Byram and Joe Rodon don’t exactly suggest a promotion push is imminent, but if Farke can work similar wonders to his time at Norwich City then Leeds could surprise a few all the same.
If the team can build momentum, then Elland Road is one of the most fearful places for an opposition team to visit, and that could make all the difference in the end.
Southampton
After a lengthy stay in the top flight, Southampton find themselves back in the Championship, wondering what’s next. The club’s ownership has come in for heavy criticism, and last season’s dismal Premier League campaign was a disaster by all accounts.
With captain James Ward-Prowse having departed for West Ham United, and Romeo Lavia joining Chelsea, it could be something of a transitional season for the club.
Russell Martin is the man spearheading this new era, and with the former Swansea boss favouring an attractive style of play, it might not be too long before we see the Saints go on a winning run.
Whether or not Southampton will have enough to mount a promotion push remains to be seen.
Leicester City
Few could have expected Leicester City to find themselves back in the Championship. Their incredible Premier League triumph in 2016 sparked a Champions League odyssey before the club captured the FA Cup just a couple of years ago.
Now they find themselves in the second tier after a torrid Premier League campaign in 2022-23.
Star players like James Maddison, Youri Tielemans and Harvey Barnes have departed, but Leicester still have plenty of firepower and will take some stopping.
Those reading Championship news will be well aware of Leicester’s capabilities, and it will be interesting to see if the Foxes can live up to the billing and secure a welcome return to the Premier League.
