A Trip to Coventry And What You Can Do

Coventry Editorial 1st Sep, 2023   0

Coventry may be dwarfed in comparison to its neighbouring midlands city of Birmingham but that doesn’t mean that locals and tourists alike can’t enjoy themselves in the city. It has had a chequered past in the last 100 years. A large part of the city was destroyed in the 1930s but it had a resurgence in the 60s and 70s due to the booming car manufacturing industry. Growth in the city slowed during the following decades but in 2021 the city was awarded the UK City of Culture which has provided the city with a new lease of life. Now, Coventry is thriving again and offers plenty of things to do in the city.

Gambling

Coventry has a number of gambling options for those who are looking for a chance to spend their money. The Grosvenor and the Genting Casinos offer poker, slots, and blackjack as well as other amenities for their visitors. While for those looking for different gambling options such as bingo, there are plenty of in-person or online options. For example, Buzz Bingo offer players the chance to sign up and play live bingo online and play games such as Double Bubble bingo, Odds & Evens among other options. Buzz also have two in-person locations which allow players to play bingo or slots at locations that also offer food and drinks.

Culture

On the back of the City of Culture title in 2021, the city has undergone a number of cultural rejuvenation projects. These projects have focused on inclusion and hospitality and aim to make the city a more attractive place to visit as well as work. For example, the BBC commissioned some of its shows to take place in the city including Antiques Roadshow and the 21 Initiative which tells local people’s stories. A number of other events have been hosted in the city too such as Coventry Moves, the first event, and the Turner Prize in 2021.

Sport

During the 90s, Coventry City were used to mixing it with the largest clubs in the country in the Premier League. They stayed in the division up until the turn of the century and had some of the best players in the country turn out in their colours, such as Gary McAllister and Dion Dublin. Since those heady days, the club has moved around the lower divisions. A lack of stability has meant stadium changes, board upheavals and dozens of managers looking to get a tune out of the squad.

Mark Robins is the latest to have a go and it looks like a period of success might be on the way. Last season, they reached the playoffs so this season they’ll be hoping to go one step further and challenge for automatic promotion. The club play at the Coventry Building Society Arena and with a season of potential success on the way it is well worth going to watch a game to see the club’s latest push for success.

Coventry’s City of Culture status ran for one year and improved facilities and infrastructure around the city. It is an exciting time for the area and is an increasingly attractive place for visitors, looking for a day trip or an extended stay. Whether it be sport, culture, gambling or another pursuit, the city has something for everyone.
