First of its kind green alliance signed in Coventry

A SOLAR farm, Coventry schools powered through green energy and a new eco economy to bring jobs to the city will be the benefits from a ‘first of its kind’ alliance.

The ambitious ideas have been mooted after Coventry City Council signed up to a 15-year partnership with E.ON which will look to transform the city’s approach to carbon reduction while saving people money.

The two organisations will look to collaborate to revolutionise energy use in the city.

Several council vehicles and depots could also be decarbonised through the partnership and there would also be a push to electrify transport with greater electric vehicle charge point access.

Coventry City Council’s cabinet member for jobs, regeneration and climate change, Coun Jim O’Boyle, said: “This is really exciting and completely innovative, no other city in the country is doing this.

“It will help Coventry move ahead with a range of projects the council would not have been able to achieve on its own.”

It is hoped the partnership will open up access to hundreds of millions of pounds of private-sector investment.

The partnership will be engaging with community groups, businesses and industry leaders over the next few months to build a clearer understanding of what the strategy needs to deliver.

The council’s draft climate change strategy and Net Zero Route map was published earlier this year.

Consultation for the strategy saw 80 per cent of those who responded describe climate change as an important issue and they wanted the Council to take action.

The UK Government has a target of net zero by 2050 and the target is to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2041.
