Work to transform former Coventry school site set to start next month

WORK to transform the former Woodlands Academy school site on Broad Lane into a specialist education centre is set to start next month.

Once completed, the new centre will see the specialist provision currently delivered by Woodfield School brought together from two separate sites.

Planning permission was granted last year for the work, which is expected to be completed and open by September 2025.

There is currently a growing demand for places for children with special educational needs and disabilities in the city.

The refurbished buildings will act as a new home for both the primary and secondary students as well as provide much-needed additional places.

Although Grade II listed, planning permission has been granted for buildings at the former boys-only secondary school to be partially demolished, refurbished, and reconfigured.

Coun Dr Kindy Sandhu, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills said: “We want every child in Coventry to have access to the best education.

“So, when the Woodlands Academy site was returned to the Council, we saw it as an opportunity to respond to parents’ wishes and invest in a new single site for Woodfield School, which currently operates on two split sites.

“Moving to one new site will provide a future-proofed, fit-for-purpose educational environment, offering a full range of facilities, including sports amenities, to learners.”
