Coventry Post Office to open after public rallying call

Coventry Editorial 3rd Oct, 2023   0

A NEW Post Office is set to open in Cheylesmore on Saturday after Coventrians rallied behind a bid to make it a reality.

The rallying call for the Post Office at the Daventry Road Budgens store was launched after the closure of the previous one on the same street last May.

Residents feel the next-nearest Post Office service was often overcrowded and too far away, making it inaccessible for those with mobility issues.

Budgens owner Karthik Varatharajan applied to open a Post Office at his store and a petition appealing for this to become a reality gained over 1,500 signatures.

In April, Coventry South MP Zarah Sultana presented a petition to Parliament urging the House of Commons to support a new Post Office in Cheylesmore.

Mr Varatharajan, who started the petition, said: “Local people were really affected when the old Daventry Road Post Office closed, so I’m thrilled this is now going to open.”

The doors will open at 10.30am on Saturday, with refreshments available and free face painting for children to celebrate.

There will also be a fund-raising stall open for Myton Hospice on the day.
