Stunning images of 'significant' Coventry mural revealed

STUNNING images of a Coventry mural by world-famous sculptor William Mitchell have been revealed for the first time in decades.

‘The History of Coventry’ was created in 1974 in the foyer of Hertford House, a former office block which is scheduled for demolition as part of the city centre south development.

The 28ft-wide mural depicts iconic moments and people from Coventry, including the cathedral fire and Lady Godiva.

It was hidden by a plaster stud wall and was only uncovered last year.

It has since been documented by Historic England as part of a report looking at art and historic buildings impacted by the more than £400million City Centre South redevelopment.

Aaron Law, from the Coventry Society, has seen many of William Mitchell’s pieces across the world and said he wanted to raise awareness of his contributions to the city’s culture.

He added the City Centre South developer, Shearer Property Regen Limited, was preparing a public art strategy to relocate Mitchell’s works both onsite and close to the redevelopment.

Aaron told the Observer: “I’ve only ever seen the mural when it was covered up so I was just amazed to see what was on it.

“It’s a massive piece of work and the fact this could be public art is brilliant.

“I have long admired Mitchell as an artist and wanted to highlight the fact we’ve got some significant artwork in Coventry.”
