A COVENTRY warehouse team leader was one of just 12 people in a special randomly selected group to take part in the groundbreaking ‘people’s panel on AI’.

Ermias Berhane, 57, was part of the group tasked with helping to steer policy-making about Artificial Intelligence.

The panel coincided with the UK government’s AI Safety Summit and aims to amplify the voices of everyday people in shaping the future of AI.

It was organised by campaigners Connected by Data and supported by experts and scientists from Cambridge University, the Ada Lovelace Institute and the Mozilla Foundation.

Ermias said: “As a member of the Eritrean community of Coventry, it is important to me that we address the discrimination risks of AI.

“I have appreciated the opportunity over three days to learn much more about the hopes and concerns there are for AI.

“In my opinion, ordinary people must be involved in decisions around AI, because we are discussing what kind of society we will have in the 21st century.”
