New Coventry book covers the launch of the 2-Tone era

Coventry Editorial 26th Dec, 2023   0

A COVENTRY author has written a new book covering the decade in which 2-Tone exploded out of Coventry, which launched the careers of The Specials and The Selecter is set to be released.

Ruth Cherrington’s new ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1970s Coventry’ features the voices and memories of Coventrians around at the time the city launched 2-Tone across the world.

The book is packed with ultra-rare photographs, memorabilia, memories and more.

Before the birth of 2-Tone, Coventry, like much of the country, was gripped by the influence of Saturday Night Fever with city pubs eager to cash in on the disco craze.

The book features tales of visits to legendary takeaway Parson’s Nose where even The Specials could be found tucking into a meal.

Ruth said: “Coventry’s Locarno Ballroom led the way in terms of after-dark entertainment at the start of the 1970s – it already had a decade of entertaining the city’s party-charged hordes under its belt.

“But it wasn’t long before it found itself with competition in the shape of Mr George’s and the City Centre Club, later Tamango’s.”
