COVENTRY City Councillors have been throwing their hats in the ring in a bid to become the Labour candidate for Coventry East for this year’s election.

The seat is currently held by Labourite Colleen Fletcher but she will not be standing in this year’s upcoming general election.

Both Coun Dr Kindy Sandhu and Coun Jim O’Boyle have announced they have submitted their applications to enter the race to be Labour’s 2024 candidate for Coventry East.

Coun Sandhu is currently the councillor for Earlsdon and Cabinet member for education and skills.

She said: “I’m proud to announce I have submitted my application to become the next Labour MP for Coventry East.

“As a local councillor, I’ve already beaten the Tories and increased my majority by 700 per cent.

“Let’s rebuild our communities, our economy and our country.”

Coun O’Boyle currently represents St Michael’s on the city council and is also cabinet member for jobs, regeneration and climate change.

He said: “Coventry is my home and I’m proud of the work I have done as a Labour Councillor.

“The challenges Coventry and the rest of the country face are immense- Tory austerity has held us all back.

“I’ll be a strong voice at Westminster for Coventry and for our country.”
