Have your say in bid to tackle issues with Coventry HMO's

COVENTRIANS will be able to have their say on mooted plans to improve the management of Homes in Multiple Occupation (HMO), boost living conditions for tenants and create crime-tackling measures.

Coventry Council chiefs are set to launch a three-month consultation on proposals to renew the city-wide HMO additional licensing scheme.

Coventry has among the highest amount of HMOs in England and Wales- around 6,800 in the private rented sector.

If green-lit, the scheme, which cracks down on landlords who don’t maintain their properties to a high enough standard, would be extended until 2030.

An HMO is a property, or part of one, shared by three or more people who are not members of the same family, with tenants usually sharing a kitchen, sink or toilet.

It can also include shared flats within a larger building.

Coun David Welsh, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, said: “Houses in multiple occupation are part of the housing mix and if they are well managed and well looked after they can be a real positive for the people that live in them.

“We think our additional licensing scheme, introduced in 2020, has helped us to improve standards for tenants and for people living nearby and it is work we want to continue.”

The consultation could start on Monday, February 26 and would run until Friday, May 17.
