A COVENTRY man who beat and kidnapped a man in Nuneaton over an alleged debt has been jailed.

The victim, a man in his 50s, was attacked after the attacker climbed through the bathroom window of his flat in the Abbey Green area of the town on June 26 last year.

Abdul Shakeel Qayyum then grabbed a wrench and started to hit the victim in the arms and head, while demanding the money he claimed he was owed.

Qayyum then said he was going to take the victim to Coventry where he would be stabbed and thrown in the canal. He then forced the victim into his car.

The victim managed to escape from the car on Greenmore Road where he ran to the nearest house screaming for help. He was taken to hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

Qayyum, 29, of Spencer Avenue, Coventry, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and kidnap following an investigation by Nuneaton CID. He was jailed for three-and-a-half years.

Det Con Thompson from Nuneaton CID said: “This was a premeditated attack and kidnap of a man who suffered a terrifying ordeal. Fortunately, he wasn’t badly injured.

“Warwickshire Police is committed to making the streets of the county safer and we will not tolerate these kinds of actions.”
