THE OLD THATCHED Inn is everything that is best about the British gastro pub.
The charming and characterful 18th century inn, which naturally has a thatched roof, is nestled in the heart of the pretty Buckinghamshire village of Adstock.
There are many other pubs which could learn a thing or two from The Old Thatched Inn. From the moment you step inside the door you are warmly welcomed. You are not simply hurried to your table, but have the option of taking a comfy sofa and enjoying a drink while looking over the menu. You can then make your order before being shown to you table.
The only difficulty with the menu of seasonal and locally sourced dishes is deciding what to have. It was a wonder we made it off the sofa.
There is an a la carte lunch and dinner menu, a set weekday lunch menu, vegetarian menu, children’s menu, specials, and by all accounts a very popular Sunday lunch option.
We started with the Breaded Ham Hock Fritters, accompanied by pckled vegetables and mustard dressing, and some of the best smoked salmon my partner’s has ever tasted.
While the Honey & Pear Cider Sausages were shouting my partner’s name, he opted to try a Buckinghamshire favourite in the Pan Fried Aylesbury duck breast, and he was not disappointed. It was served with homemade duck faggot, savoury cabbage and swede mash. For me it was the 8 hour braised blade of beef – with creamed potatoes and roasted root vegetables – which simply melted in the mouth.
We still managed to find room for a fantastic bread and butter pudding, served with, of course, English custard, and an intriguing apple crumble Eton mess.
Drinks-wise, The Old Thatched serves a choice selection of wines, some fine real ales, and just about everything else one would expect.
The food is not the cheapest you will find, but I would challenge you to find better quality at the price.
The traditional British pub may be going through tough times, but while their are establishments such as The Old Thatched Inn, the British pub will always have a future.
