Playboy of the Western World heading to Leamington's Loft Theatre.

THE PLAYBOY of the Western World is taking to the stage at Leamington’s Loft Theatre.

When John Millington Synge’s comedy was first staged in 1907 it caused a riot and sent shock waves across the Irish dramatic world.

Set in a small village on the west coast of County Mayo, The Playboy of the Western World tells the story of Christy Mahon, a lonely chancer, who wanders into a pub claiming that he has killed his father.

Instead of being outraged, the locals praise Christy for his boldness and he soon becomes something of a town hero.

The men toast him and the women try to woo him, however there turns out to be an unexpected twist in his tale.

Director, Gus MacDonald said: “I was in Playboy over 20 years ago and it was one of the best theatrical experiences I’ve had. Given the opportunity to direct it I jumped at the chance – it has almost everything – rollicking humour bordering on the farcical, pathos, a love story, music and it is rightly regarded as one of the real classics of Irish theatre.”

Along with Gus, several members of the cast first performed Playboy at the Loft two decades ago and have returned to play the older characters, including Tom O’Connor who originally played Christy Mahon and now is playing his father Old Mahon, and Mary MacDonald, now playing the Widow Quinn, who originally played Pegeen Mike.

The production runs from February 27 to March 9.
