Charity 'hero' honoured for dedication and commitment

A ‘HIDDEN hero’ has been praised for his dedication and commitment to his role as a support worker at Warwickshire Mencap.

Shaun Keaney said he was ‘overwhelmed’ after being named as a Hidden Hero by Room to Reward, which gives charity workers like him free two-night breaks in unsold hotel rooms.

Room to Reward gave him the honour for ‘playing a huge part in Mencap’s running’ and being ‘a real asset to the team, producing endless excellent work with and for the people they support’.

Coventry resident Shaun, who works for the learning disability charity in Leamington and across Warwickshire, said: “I am overwhelmed by this reward.

“It’s nice to know that the support I give to the people we support is noticed by management and I really appreciate being nominated, let alone receiving the reward.

“I didn’t realise how much the little things that I do with people we support impact on their lives.”

Mencap’s Regional Operations Manager Richard Ellis said Shaun plays a valuable part in Mencap’s ‘big plan and values’.

He added: “Shaun plays a huge part in Mencap’s conversations, gives his feedback and will challenge where necessary.

“He is a real asset to the team and produces endless excellent work with and for the people we support.”

Adam Terpening, Charity Director of Room to Reward, said: “The power of a ‘thank you’ is untold. Our scheme is a simple one but the impact it has on the charity sector is significant.

“We feel honoured to be able to recognise those who make such a difference to the lives of others.”

Room to Reward was established to let charities motivate, thank and contribute to the well-being of their volunteers and staff. It works with many registered charities, including Macmillan Caring, National Autistic Society, Maggie’s Cancer Centres and Hearing Dogs for Deaf People as well as Mencap.
