THE new £82million extension to Coventry Railway Station was officially opened on Monday.

Coventry’s town crier opened the event before the Lord Mayor Coun John McNicholas and cabinet member for jobs, regeneration and climate change, Coun Jim O’Boyle unveiled a plaque.
Funders and partners were also there to celebrate the opening.
The new building includes a new multi-story car park and retail units and connects to a new footbridge that allows travelers access to all four of the station’s platforms.
Other new features include a new drop-off loop, taxi rank and transport hub, as well as new cycle storage and electric charge points.
The opening of this new extension comes on the 60th anniversary of the current Grade 2 listed station.
The new extension was greenlit to deal with the rising number of passengers visiting Coventry Station, with the existing building operating as normal.
Coventry’s Lord Mayor, Coun John McNicholas said: “Our new rail station looks fantastic – very befitting of the UK City of Culture, and a city with such an exciting future.
“Like our city, our rail station has undergone some amazing changes in recent months.”
