Funding of nearly £2million for 12 arts and culture organisations across Coventry and Warwickshire

ARTS and culture organisations across Coventry and Warwickshire have received funding of nearly £2million.

Gaydon-based British Motor Industry Heritage Trust, the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Museum in Warwick, Kasbah in Coventry and Taylor and Foley Prop Makers in Alcester are among the 12 organisations to receive support in the second round of government’s Culture Recovery Fund.

The British Motor Museum received more than £700,000 which it will used to cover the cost of utilities and insurance. It will also pay staff who look after the collections until next spring.

And the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Museum – the only museum in the country which tells the story of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment – received around £115,000. The money will be used to keep the building open in line with government covid safety guidelines.

Curator Stephanie Bennett said: “It is fantastic news to be awarded a grant. We are really fortunate to receive the public money which is a lifeline for us over the next few months enabling us to deliver heritage to the community and a real chance to bounce back in the future.”

Coventry-based Kasbah – which has previously hosted performers including Arctic Monkeys and Calvin Harris – will be using its £180,000 grant to allow reopening in a covid-safe environment.

Others to receive funding include local beatbox champion Beardyman and The Highlife Centre in Coventry, which enables artists to grow their talents.

Arts Council England area director Peter Knott said: “We’re delighted the Culture Recovery Fund has enabled support for a wide range of arts and cultural sector companies across Coventry and Warwickshire. This latest set of awards builds on those announced recently and will help hundreds of organisations to survive the next few months, ensuring that the cultural sector can bounce back after the crisis.

“Government’s package is hugely welcome, providing much of the sector with resources to remain in business through to the spring. Well-loved community projects, theatres, galleries, museums, clubs, music venues, festivals, key cultural suppliers along with other creative spaces and projects have benefited. This is welcome news not only for those in receipt of the funding but also for communities in villages, towns and cities across the midlands where this matters so much.”

The funding comes just days after the first round of grants, which were received by the likes of Compton Verney Art Gallery and Park, the Royal Spa Centre and Warwick Arts Centre.
