It may be Christmas but these dogs are still waiting in kennels for a loving home - can you help?

HOMELESS dogs are hoping to find somewhere to put their paws up this Christmas.

After the success of the Observer and Dogs Trust’s 12 Dogs of Christmas appeal last year – which saw three pups rehomed – we are again appealing to readers to find a place in their hearts and homes for a four-legged friend.

But the charity is urging people to remember its famous slogan – a dog is for life, not just for Christmas – and think about the responsibility taking on a four-legged friend entails.

Manager Emma Healey said: “Our 12 dogs of Christmas each have differing looks, personalities and needs but each one will make a wonderful addition to a loving new home so we are appealing for anyone who would like to rehome one of these deserving dogs to please get in touch.

“Our slogan, ‘A Dog is for life, not just for Christmas’ is as relevant today as it was when it was first coined 40 years ago. We continue to see many dogs coming through our doors over the Christmas period, simply because individuals haven’t taken into consideration the lifelong commitment of dog ownership.

“We urge anyone thinking of getting a dog during this busy period to seriously think about the commitment involved before making a decision to bring a four-legged family member into your home. Dog ownership can be challenging but also extremely rewarding, especially if you are giving a rescue dog a second chance at happiness.

“As always, we are reminding everyone that a dog is for life, not just for Christmas, and, if you are thinking about getting a dog in 2019, consider rehoming a rescue dog.”

Rolo

Nine-year-old Miniature Pinscher Rolo may be small but he has a huge character. He loves to learn new things – especially in return for a treat. He does get a little worried when it comes to meeting new people so will need patient owners in an adult-only home, who have the time to help him settle into his new life.

Rolo lived in a home before, was housetrained and stayed on his own for a couple of hours. With lots of time and patience he would make a loyal companion.

Ruby

Rottweiler Ruby is a timid pup looking for patient owners who will take their time getting to know her. When she has formed a bond she can be quite affectionate and enjoys fuss and her cuddly toys. The seven-year-old pup is an intelligent girl and will make a wonderful companion in an adult-only home with owners who are willing to let her come to them at her own pace.

Dingo

Dingo has been at the rehoming centre for a while now and staff say the 13-year-old Crossbreed deserves the chance to flourish in a home. He’s a busy chap and loves to play chase and run around with his toys. He’d need an active environment with owners who can give him the physical and mental exercise he craves. He adores human attention so would prefer to be the only dog in the home where he can enjoy it all to himself.

Monty

This six-year-old Patterdale cross is a shy boy looking for a special single-person household who can give him the home he dreams of. He’ll be your friend for life if you play with him as he loves his toys. He’s a cheeky chap and will make a wonderful companion with someone patient who can offer him and lots of love. He is happy to have a four-legged-friend to walk with but would prefer to be the only dog in the home.

Jack

Jack is the oldest dog at the centre at 14-years-old. The crossbreed has lived in a home for most of his life and came to Dogs Trust due to a change in his owner’s circumstances so would like a second chance at a forever home. He is looking for a quiet adult-only home with minimal visitors. Give him a cosy, comfy bed to curl up in and he is quite happy snoozing the day away. Once you get to know Jack he is very friendly and loves going out for his daily walks.

Butch

Crossbreed Butch appeared in the Observer’s 12 Dogs of Christmas campaign last year but is yet to find his happy ending. The two-year-old pup previously lived in a home and is looking to get back to a quiet adult-only environment. He is very food motivated and loves his toys which makes training much easier and much more fun for him too. Staff say he is a ‘smashing lad’ who is looking for dedicated owners willing to take their time getting to know him. He loves his walks on the field especially when he gets the chance to bounce around in the long grass. He would need to be the only pet in his new home.

Diego

This six-year-old sweet-natured Greyhound has a lot of energy to burn. He loves his walks and having a good sprint around the run. He’d suit an active home with new owners who will have the time to train and exercise him. He could live with children of 12 years or over as long as they are used to lively, bouncy dogs. He loves his toys more than anything and gets very excited when he receives a new one. Diego will prefer to be the only dog in the home and once settled will be a fun pet.

Oliver

Lurcher Oliver is a sweet boy with a sensitive side. The seven-year-old is very food oriented which is handy when starting to build a bond with him. He enjoys long walks and trots beautifully by your side. He’s looking for understanding owners who can help him settle into home life and can live with sensible children aged 11 or above who can give him some time on his own when he needs it. He’s a sweet boy who can’t wait to find his special someone.

Cleo

Three-year-old German Shepherd Cleo has not had the best start in life and likes quiet environments. She has some worries in new places and would like an adult-only home. She likes four-legged play friends but would prefer to be the only pet in the home. Cleo would love a rural home with a large secure garden she can run around in and relax away from the hustle and bustle. Once she knows you, she is so sweet and would play with you all day if she could. She’s a cheeky girl will bags of potential, she just needs the right environment to flourish in.

Radley

Sweet Radley hasn’t had a great start to life and is looking for a forever home where his true personality can come to life. The seven-year-old crossbreed is very affectionate and loves to curl up on your lap so would be more than happy to spend time with you on the sofa whilst you relax. He is housetrained and could live with children aged 12 and above, although would prefer to be the only pet.

Suede

Talented Labrador cross Suede recently scooped the prize of Best Treat Catcher but loves nothing more than a paddling pool and a tennis ball. The four-year-old has lots of love to give – he’s just looking for the right home to provide him with the stimulation he needs as he can be a bit of a livewire. He doesn’t like being left alone too long so new owners would need to be around most of the day and have time alone built up gradually. He’d like an adult-only home with no other pets with active owners who like to go on long walks to keep him physically and mentally exercised.

Jimmy

This Collie cross is described by Dogs Trust staff as ‘intelligent and ball mad’. The six-year-old likes nothing more than a game of fetch. He also enjoys playing with calm canine friends, but not if they’re too bouncy so would prefer to be the only dog in his new home. He’d like to live in an adult-only home with patient owners who will help him settle into home life as it will all be new to him. He’s very bright so brain games and puzzles will help keep his mind active and help him build up a bond.
