Man and his dog take on mammoth walk to oppose HS2

ONE man and his dog are undertaking a mammoth walk to campaign against HS2.

Joe Rukin and his pet pooch Eevee are walking the proposed route of the high speed line from Birmingham to Leeds. When they arrive the pair will then get a train to Manchester before walking the other half of the route towards London.

The Kenilworth resident – who is the Stop HS2 campaign manager – is hoping to raise awareness about the impact the controversial line will have and is calling for the plans to be scrapped.

He is currently halfway through the walk, which is expected to take 11 days and see him walk around 300 miles.

He said: “It is increasingly evident HS2 is in real trouble and has to be cancelled right now. It is clear the new government is seriously looking at cancelling HS2, because it won’t deliver on the promises that are being made of it, there are more important priorities. It is incompatible with the climate emergency, the costs are out of control and it has only got this far because it’s been lobbied for by the vested interests that will make billions out of it.

“Our message to government is loud and clear, HS2 must be cancelled immediately. Work has to halt now, because the damage to the natural environment is happening now, the wholesale clearance of ancient woodland is scheduled now, and it is no good to say in a few weeks that HS2 might be cancelled after that irreparable damage has been done.”
