Questions raised over Jeremy Wright appointment as secretary of state for digital, culture, media and sport

QUESTIONS are being asked over Kenilworth MP Jeremy Wright’s suitability for his new role as Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

Mr Wright – Attorney General for England and Wales since 2014 – was promoted to Theresa May’s cabinet following Matt Hancock’s move to the Department of Health, and as the Prime Minister struggles to keep her Brexit strategy on track following the high profile resignations this week of David Davis and Boris Johnson.

But political commentators have been quick to question 45-year-old Mr Wright’s suitability for the ‘digital’ aspect of his new job as he has a near non-existent online presence.

Mr Wright is understood to have had a Twitter account since April 2015 – but it was only used five times during that year’s election campaign.

And a commentator noted that during his 13 years in parliament Mr Wright had said the word ‘digital’ only twice.

Sport-wise, Mr Wright says he enjoys a game of golf in his ‘very limited free time’, and also enjoys watching cricket, He also says he likes playing cricket but admits to being ‘useless’.

With the country currently gripped by World Cup fever, it is not known if Mr Wright has any footballing allegiances. The nearest professional club to his constituency is Coventry City.

Culturally, Mr Wright enjoys listening to music and he used to play the trumpet, but added he could ‘barely get a note out of the instrument these days’

He also enjoys travelling, and has a particular fondness for the United States.

The father-of-two has been MP for Kenilworth and Southam since 2010. He was MP for Kenilworth and Rugby from 2005 before boundary changes saw the seat abolished.
