SWIMMERS were back at a disused quarry just over a week after a teenager died there.
Luke Murphy, age 17, got into difficulties while swimming at the Blue Pool in Bishops Itchington on Thursday (July 26). His body was recovered the following day.
But on Saturday (August 4) owners of Bishops Bowl Fishery, which operate in the two adjoining lakes at the former limestone quarry, say youngsters were back in the water.
After they asked some to leave police were called, and one person even refused to stop swimming even after officers told him to get out.
Now police and Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service have teamed up to ask people not to swim in lakes, quarries or open water following the recent death and a number of incidents across the country.
They will also be increasing patrols at local quarries and lakes to talk to young people about the dangers of swimming in open water – which can include freezing temperatures and dangerous, disused equipment.
Spokesman for Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service, Tim Sargent said: “We know with the warmer weather that swimming in open water can be a real attraction, but the water is very deceiving and can often take you under, especially if you dive into the water. Add cold water shock to the mix and you have a recipe for disaster.
“Our advice to anyone considering going into the water is just not to do it. However, we know that we know that people will still be tempted. So if you are out with friends and you do decide to swim, then don’t drink alcohol, as this will inhibit your ability and perception of risk and will leave you unable to deal with the cold water shock.
“Stay together and look out for each other. If something does happen, call emergency services immediately – do not attempt a rescue yourself.”
