Warwickshire Pride to return this weekend with 'extra sparkle'

Laura Kearns 14th Aug, 2019

THERE will be an extra sparkle to this year’s Warwickshire Pride festival in Leamington.

The festival, taking place in the Pump Room gardens on Saturday (August 17) – will have a ‘golden’ theme to mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York, which started the Pride movement worldwide.

The festival celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) life and culture and will see more than 70 stalls take over the gardens from 11am to 6pm.

There will also be fairground rides, food, a bar, chill out zones and live entertainment by the likes of Baby D, who is known for her hit Let Me Be Your Fantasy.

And Warwickshire Pride spokesman Daniel Browne said the festival was needed now more than ever.

Recently there has been hate-filled comments on the charity’s social media accounts and its banners and posters ripped down in the town.

Daniel said: “We’ll be remembering those who paved the way for our rights and also highlighting why Pride is still needed. Only this week someone has commented on our Facebook page that gay people should be killed. It’s why Pride always was, and still is, a protest. We encourage everyone to come along and join in.

“There will be more rainbows, fabulousness and entertainment than ever before. The festival is now in its seventh year and continues to be recognised as one of the most welcoming and inclusive Pride events in the country. We aim to represent the whole LGBT spectrum, but of course anyone is welcome come and join in with the celebrations.”
