Where’s wallaby? Warwickshire marsupial caught on the hop

A WALLABY has been caught on camera bouncing along the road in Warwickshire.

Colin the white wallaby was spotted by a Warwickshire Police dog handler last night (Monday February 14) in the Kenilworth area.

The marsupial, nicknamed Colin by locals, has been regularly spotted near the town in recent months.

A spokesperson for Warwickshire Rural Crime Team said: “We don’t know at the moment if Colin is by him/herself or part of a larger mob.

“Colin might look friendly, but please don’t try and approach him if spotted, it’s best to watch from afar.”

Colin has been spotted so regularly that some believe there may be a small, unrecognised wallaby colony in Warwickshire.

Wallabies have been present in Britain for more than a century after being imported for zoos and private collections – but have proved to be experts at escaping, and adaptable enough to survive in the British countryside.

Many were intentionally released during the Second World War, leading to a population becoming established in the Peak District which is believed to have become extinct in 2009.

There were 95 reported sightings of wallabies in Britain between 2008-2018, most in the south of England.
