Coventry teachers set up zero-waste market

A ZERO-waste market is coming to Warwickshire.

Eco company ‘Zero’ has been set up by mums Charlie Demetriou and Marisa Edworthy and will launch in Harbury on Saturday October 20.

Conscientious shoppers can expect to find dry and organic goods such as rice, pasta, grains, legumes, herbs, spices, tea, coffee and chocolate at the package-free stall.

A selection of household cleaning and hygiene products will also be available.

The two eco-friendly mums – who are both teachers at Southfields Primary in Coventry – had long shared a common dream of a package-free food shop.

Marisa said: “When we became parents it made us more aware of the kind of world our children would be growing up in. We both started out with cloth nappies and this opened our eyes to finding other more eco-conscious choices we could make as parents.

“However we were constantly feeling overwhelmed by the needless packaging in other areas of our family lives particularly as part of the supermarket shop.”

The pair began learning about small but effective changes they could make, and how they could help others to do the same.

The 34-year-old added: “It wasn’t long before we decided that we could be part of the movement for change and could help to get this message out to our local area and provide a much needed service to anyone who might also want to try and make a lifestyle change for cleaner living that would have a less harmful impact on the planet.”

The mums say they aim to offer competitive prices – since part of the cost for a supermarket product is for the packaging – to help make zero waste shopping accessible to as many people as possible.

Shoppers will be able to take along their own containers for purchases, or if necessary a variety will be available to buy at the stall.
