Eight and great for Coventry

Ben Tyler 17th Feb, 2020

A CRUSHING eight-try showing from Coventry took them to an emphatic 55-3 victory over basement club Yorkshire Carnegie in the RFU Championship.

Rowland Winter’s men were deserved winners after recovering from an early deficit to go in front on 26 minutes, stretching out their lead with a late flurry of tries to subject the visitors to further misery.

Joe Carlisle got the scoring underway with a fourth-minute penalty for the visitors, which was as good as the afternoon would get for Carnegie.

An illegal play by Yorkshire gifted Rory Jennings the opportunity to level on ten minutes, before Coventry finally went in front after a turgid start when Andy Forsyth intercepted play and raced home for his first try in club colours. Jennings duly converted the extras.

A second try followed two minutes before the break to give the hosts a welcome cushion, as Jennings’ charge allowed Tony Fenner to finish from close range. Coventry’s number ten once more kicked the extras successfully.

Within two minutes of the restart, the hosts were 21 points clear when a quick penalty allowed Tom Kessell to go over for a converted score.

Kessell was the man to claim try number four, albeit unconverted, to secure a bonus point for his side when a darting run from a ruck took him over the whitewash on 56 minutes.

The late blitz was prompted by George Oram’s first try of the season, converted by Jennings, 13 minutes from time.

A sixth try from Will Owen four minutes later, and a converted seventh, provided by Pete White with five minutes to go, bolstered Coventry’s stronghold further.

White notched a final score, this time converted by Dan Lewis, in the dying seconds to complete a comprehensive victory for Winter and co., moving the Butts Park Arena outfit up to fourth.

The small task of a home clash with second-placed Ealing Trailfinders now awaits in just over a week’s time on Friday, February 28 (7.45pm).
