FOOTBALL - Frank Lampard always believed Coventry City would overturn West Brom deficit in latest Sky Blues victory

FRANK Lampard always believed his Coventry City side would overturn an early two-goal deficit to see off West Bromwich Albion and move further clear at the top of the Championship table.

The Sky Blues found themselves two goals behind just past the half-hour mark at the Coventry Building Society Arena after Aune Heggebo netted a first-half brace.

However, Josh Eccles halved the deficit before the break while Albion midfielder Jayson Molumby saw red early in the second period.

And Coventry made the most of the man advantage to stage a stunning comeback as quickfire goals from Eillis Simms and Victor Torp completed the turnaround.

The Sky Blues now lead the Championship table by seven points and Lampard praised the resilience of his side to come from two goals down to seal another three points.

Lampard said: “We played pretty well in the first half. There were no problems other than two mistakes.

“Not common for us this season, to allow people to run into our box and score inside the six-yard box. We’ll take that on the chin.

“I liked that the players never stopped. Even at two-nil, my feeling was still ‘we can definitely get back in this’.

“The goal [before half time] really helps to give us a feeling that we can do it and we deserved it.

“We’re going to get tested. You can’t play this many games in a season and have it all your own way.

“We were brilliant all round. We fully deserved it in the end and from being two-nil down, that’s great because it shows the level of resilience in the group.”

City face Middlesbrough in midweek in a top-of-the-table clash with former Sky Blues assistant Adi Viveash currently in interim charge at the Riverside Stadium.

And Lampard anticipates a difficult test for his side in Teesside with Boro currently in a transitional process following the recent departure of head coach Rob Edwards.

Lampard added: “It’s a tough period for everybody up until Christmas because of the amount of games that we play in this league.

“We haven’t got the biggest squad. Let’s recover and see where we’re at.

“Middlesbrough will be a tough game because they’re in a mini-transition even though they’re up there.

“They’ve changed a lot this season but we’ll try and go again in what’s going to be a tough match.”

Coventry are next in action against Middlesbrough on Tuesday, November 25 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Riverside.
