FORMER Arsenal and England striker Alan Smith does not think a move for goalkeeper Mark Travers would represent a gamble for Coventry City.
Coventry remain in the market for a new goalkeeper despite the club entering ‘advanced talks’ with Brighton and Hove Albion over the signing of Carl Rushworth.
The Sky Blues have reportedly also shown interest in Everton shot-stopper Mark Travers should the club miss out on primary target Rushworth.
Travers did not play a single minute of Premier League football at Everton last season with his involvement limited to two appearances in the EFL Cup.
However, Sky Sports pundit Smith does not think Travers’ lack of minutes will impact on the player’s quality between the sticks.
Speaking to BestBettingSites.co.uk, Smith said: “With keepers, maybe it’s not such a big thing.
“He’s been understudy to Jordan Pickford, hasn’t he? And had that loan spell at Middlesbrough, which he’d have been pleased about.
“He’s shown he can do it in the Premier League when he was at Bournemouth, you know. Played a lot of games for them there.
“So the track record, the quality is there, I think, and he’ll be anxious to be starting matches regularly now.
“So yeah, I don’t think it’s a massive gamble, to be honest.”
The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international played 24 games for Bournemouth in the Premier League after progressing through the club’s academy.
He played a key role in the club’s promotion back to the top flight in 2021/22 and won the golden glove award at the end of the campaign.
Travers has spent time on loan at Stoke City and Middlesbrough in recent seasons and has earned six caps for Ireland.
