There can be no doubt that World Cup finals provide the most prominent of windows in which talent can be showcased. Well over a couple of billion eyes descended on that tournament every four years.
Only a select few get the chance to grace such a stage, with said outings often representing a career highlight. Pride and passion are rarely in short supply where international action is concerned.
Supporters will forever side with club over country in any debates there, but players take understandable delight in being able to pull on the colours of their respective nations.
Shrewd recruitment
Many, of course, are fortunate enough to tick all of those boxes. Success at the domestic level tends to go hand-in-hand with international selection. Leading lights in Coventry have found that out. The Sky Blues are seeing football odds tumble in their favour when it comes to a promotion bid in 2025-26, with Frank Lampard’s side now as short as 4/7 to claim the Championship title. Taking that step up is never easy, with Premier League 2025/26 online bets proving as much as Burnley – who finished as runners-up in the second tier last term – slide to 1/500 in relegation markets.
Coventry have sat outside of that top-flight party for 25 years, slipping as far as League Two at one stage, but have enjoyed a remarkable journey back towards the Promised Land.
Shrewd recruitment has helped them down that path, on and off the field, with the right blend of technical ability and tactical know-how being found. When it comes to one of the most difficult artforms in football, Haji Wright has been a resounding success.
A club-record fee was required to prise him away from Turkish football, but that has proved to be money well spent.
Personal bests have been posted by the Los Angeles native during his time in the West Midlands, allowing further recognition to be enjoyed with the USMNT. He is now counting down the days to a home World Cup in the summer of 2026.
While international performers aplenty have passed through Highfield Road and the CBS Arena down the years, few have been given the chance to grace a major tournament in their own backyard.
Coventry natives will be wishing Wright well, with the plan being that there will be no need to shroud a prized asset in secrecy. The American forward is no longer an unknown quantity and has already generated transfer talk.
He is poised to take centre on the grandest of sporting platforms, placing him towards the front of the aforementioned shop display. Coventry intend to ensure that there is no price tag hanging around his neck.
Bold prediction

If Lampard’s men can complete the job when it comes to securing promotion back into the big time, then the likes of Wright will have no need to consider making a move elsewhere in order to fulfil personal ambition.
Former Sky Blues striker Clinton Morrison is among those to have said: “If he is going to play in the Premier League, it will be with Coventry.”
That is a bold prediction, but one that comes closer to being proved correct with each passing round of fixtures. A window to the world is being presented to Wright, but that should remain bolted from the inside, as the same can be said of his domestic endeavours.
