Former England international Frank Lampard is heading into his first full season as Coventry City manager, and it could make or break the rest of his career.
After spells with Derby County, Chelsea (twice) and Everton, the 47-year-old arrived at Coventry with his managerial reputation tarnished.
He guided the Sky Blues to the Championship play-off semi-finals last season, sparking talk that he was finally on his way to proving he could cut it as a manager.
The 2025/26 season gives him the chance to deliver success to a club that many people believe has the potential to become established in the Premier League.
Lampard’s presence at Coventry has boosted the club’s exposure, and it will be intriguing to see if he can silence the doubters and guide them into the top flight.
Online bookmakers rate them as 12/1 shots to win the Championship, and those odds have attracted interest in some far-flung corners of the world.

A reputation in need of rescue
Lampard built his managerial career off the back of his sparkling reputation as one of the greatest English midfielders of all time.
However, he has struggled to impress. He started off at Derby and did a decent job getting them to the play-off final, but they were defeated by Aston Villa.
His results at Derby earned him an emotional return to Chelsea, but the club was dealing with a transfer ban and the loss of club legend Eden Hazard.
He defied the odds in his debut campaign, steering the Blues to a top-four finish despite having to rely on young players such as Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Reece James.
But he failed to build on that success in his second season. Despite spending around £200 million on new players, he was handed his marching orders mid-season.
Lampard subsequently took over at Everton and helped them survive relegation. But there was hardly any improvement the following season as they were back to fighting for their lives.
His dismissal at Everton was a damaging blow to his career. But it somehow got even worse when he agreed to return to Chelsea as interim head coach and managed just one win in 11 games.
The Englishman spent one year as a pundit before reviving his career when he took over at Coventry from Mark Robins in November 2024.
His appointment was met with plenty of criticism from the fanbase. His managerial stock was at an all-time low following forgettable stints in the Premier League.
His underachievement was punctuated by a stint at Soccer Aid 2024, where Lampard was a co-manager for the England charity team. It was a light-hearted job that underlined how far he had fallen.
The idea that he could transform Coventry into serious contenders for promotion seemed fanciful, but he came close to achieving the feat.
Why This Season Matters More Than Any Other
Lampard knows better than anyone that football is an unforgiving business. One win from eleven games at Chelsea left a scar on his CV that still lingers.
His tenure at Everton was defined by crisis management and relegation battles. He cannot afford another misstep. The 2025/26 campaign is arguably Lampard’s last chance to rewrite the narrative.
If he takes Coventry to the Premier League, he will re-establish himself as a coach with pedigree, resilience and vision. Opinion will shift from ‘overhyped legend’ to ‘reborn tactician’.
Failure could be fatal for his managerial career. In the eyes of potential employers, another faltering campaign might confirm their doubts.
Lampard needs to prove that he has learned from his mistakes, grown as a strategist and matured as a man-manager. His second seasons at clubs have typically ended in disaster.
If things go pear-shaped at Coventry, it could mark the end of his topsy-turvy career. But things are looking up for him at the moment, and he has a decent enough squad to push for a play-off spot.
Australian international winger Raphael Borges Rodrigues could be an ace up his sleeve. The 21-year-old hardly kicked a ball for Coventry last season thanks to muscular issues.
