This is anything but a shaggy dog story – it’s a transformation tale (tail) of dogs arriving for their first visit to Purdy’s Pet Shop and Dusty’s Dog Wash sometimes with a growl, but leaving gleaming, with tails wagging and a big smile matched by the one on their owner’s face.
And the reason for those big smiles on all faces is because of Purdy’s walk in DIY Dog Wash Service.
No longer do you need to lift a reluctant pet over the side of your bath at home to clean and freshen up your pouch.
(In my case, it’s not an easy task to lift an overweight golden lab called Levi, and then trying to hold him still, whilst showering the shampoo off).
Purdy’s offer Coventry Pet Owners the ideal solution – no more wet muddy carpets, or sodden towels or a drenched and exhausted ‘you’ – all you need to do now is to pop into Purdy’s, and part with as little as £8 for a DIY Dog wash experience that the dogs all love and the owners do too – shampoo, towels are all supplied.
Becky Harrington the Owner and Tracey Nelson Shop Manager opened the doors of Purdy’s Pet Shop in Radford for the first time in January 2020 – just a few short months before Covid 19 arrived at our shores.
The timing couldn’t have been worse for Becky and Tracey but they changed their plan of action and continued working part time hours at the start of the pandemic, and delivering pet food and supplies to those folk within Coventry with pets, who had to self isolate.
But over recent months they have introduced all the very sound Covid Safety Precautions and are now open Monday – Saturday 9 am – 5.30 pm.
They have masks available for owners plus gloves and sanitising gels and they monitor the number of people and their pets in the shop at all times. So everyone can be assured they will always be safe and sound at Purdy’s.
Becky and Tracey both owners of much loved pets themselves, have a motto they really stick to… ‘They will only sell things that they are happy to give to their own pets’.
So everything in Purdy’s is just right – fully researched, of good quality, nutritious products that are full of organic natural ingredients and all, most importantly, at affordable prices.
Purdy’s continue to offer a delivery service to folk within Coventry at no extra charge – so long as they spend £5 or more on items ordered.
Purdy’s Pet Shop caters for big dogs, little dogs, nervous dogs, for dogs with upset tummies and on one occasion for a Rottweiler mum and her six eight-week-old puppies and it sounds like a splashing time was had by all.
Becky and Tracey have recently taken on an apprentice who joined Purdy’s and she is starting her ‘Grooming’ Training at College this month.
I did ask Becky if anything unusual or amusing had occurred since opening Purdy’s and she mentioned owners coming in with cats on leads and rabbits too. She also said they had had a problem with items taken from their Pet Snack Bar by naughty doggies when their owners weren’t looking. But as Becky went on to say: ‘We don’t mind – but we do make sure the more expensive items are on the top shelf out of reach of most pets!’
When I asked about future plans Becky told me about ‘Covid Permitting’ a visit from Father Christmas, so owners will be able to bring their pets along to see Father Christmas and have their photos taken with him and receive a small gift – but more of that later in the year.
Both Becky and Tracey are looking forward to the arrival of live animals in the New Year – so there will be hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs to see and buy as pets.

It was really so lovely and inspiring to talk to Becky and Tracey as it is obvious that they both absolutely love everything they do, with all the animals that come to Purdy’s.
