UK Redefines “Gaming Table” to Limit Casino Machine Use

The UK government has made a few amendments to its Gambling Act of 2005, particularly on the subject of gaming tables and how they are defined in casinos.

This new regulation redefines gaming tables as tables that are operated directly by casino staff.

This move is aimed at ensuring that there is a balance between the number of automated machines in the casino and traditional gaming tables.

Before the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) came up with this amendment, some casinos relied heavily on gaming machines that had levers that could kick-start a game. By using these machines, some casinos have increased their gaming machine allowance, without providing the needed social interactions that come with staff-operated tables. This lack of social interaction has caused many gamers to turn their attention to online platforms. Most online casinos already offer some of the most popular games that players go to play at land-based casinos, such as slots, blackjack and poker, all of which are mobile-device friendly. Without social interaction, there is no reason for many of them to physically visit a casino since they can play just about any game with just a few taps on their phones from any location.

With this new amendment to its 2005 Gambling Act, the UKGC aims to make gambling more of a social activity, making it possible for players to interact with people in real time while enjoying the thrill that comes with gaming. This amendment would not pose a huge challenge for operators, as making their casinos more social will only make them more appealing to players, especially those who like visiting land-based casinos.

This amendment is among a couple of new restrictions that may be introduced into the UK’s gambling environment. As part of the new amendments, the UKGC is looking to increase the ratio of gaming machines from two to five for every gaming table in small casinos. Despite this change, it keeps the limit on gaming machines in casinos at 80.

In March, the UKGC issued new rules on cross-promotional bonuses and set new wagering limits as well. It put a ban on gambling promotions that require players to participate in more than one game before they can claim their bonuses, while also placing new limits on the number of times players can restake bonus funds before claiming their winnings. This change was made after it was discovered that players may be confused by these promotions. Ultimately, this gambling restriction is for the protection of players.

This latest amendment shows that the UKGC is concerned about creating a safe, balanced, and socially active environment within its casino sector. By redefining what gaming tables are and reminding operators of the importance of staff-operated tables, the regulator shows that it is willing to keep the traditional casino experience while embracing new technological advancements in the form of gaming machines.

Technological advancements have been a key driver of the UK’s gambling economy, and by making this amendment, the UKGC aims to create a framework that welcomes innovation but also ensures that players enjoy the social aspect of gaming. This is a win-win situation for everyone.
