When Does the 2026 UK Angling Season Open and Where Can You Fish in Coventry?

Correspondent 31st Mar, 2026   0

Each year, the waterways of Britain are closed to allow the fish to make their moves and spawn across the country. It’s a necessary step to take to keep fish stocks plentiful and to allow each species to recover from the increasingly popular activity, as well as other issues that crop up on the lakes and rivers.

After all, pollution remains a big problem on Britain’s waters, not helped by the behaviour of the water companies. In any case, the angling season isn’t far away now. The offseason will soon conclude, and perhaps with the exception of one popular spot, Coventry’s local anglers will get to cast a line and relax on the banks once more.

A Growing Interest in an Age-Old Activity

Angling is enjoying a new resurgence in the public consciousness. No longer seen as a dull activity, people now covet the strike or the day out with others. Nowadays, when you play slots at Sky Vegas, you can’t miss the fishing theme. Big Bass is the biggest name in the game, having popularised the fishing feature and expanded from there.

Whether it’s Big Bass 3 Little Fish, Big Bass Master Classic, or Big Bass It’s a Whopper, the central feature emulates the strike in angling. You get free spins where fish symbols swim about on the reels with cash symbols. Hit a fisherman at the same time as any of these fish, and you’ll reel in the whole lot with the cash prize and more.

The slots scene is teeming with fishing games, but where angling has seen another resurgence is on TV. Fishing shows surfed into the spotlight in the late 00s, putting the exotic and the extreme to the forefront. Now, it’s more about getting together with some chums to enjoy the lulls as much as the highs, and everything in between. At the forefront of this new trend of angling entertainment is Gone Fishing. Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse go across the UK, pick some lovely spots, cast a line, and have a chinwag. Sometimes they’ll land a fish or two. The uptick in interest likely fuelled the backing for the new Salt Water Sportsman talk show, too.

When and Where to Cast a Line in Coventry

From 15 March to 15 June, it’s the close season for fishing in the UK. Rivers, drains, streams, scientific sites, and stillwaters are not open for anglers during this spell, as detailed by the Angling Trust. The aim is to protect the coarse fish and allow their spawning to take place.

When ‘The Glorious 16th’ rolls around, you’ll get to fish on the freshwater of Britain and, more specifically, Coventry and the surrounding area again. First, you’ll need a rod licence. Then, check to see if any fees or bookings need to be paid or made in advance of your arrival. Finally, it’s time to cast a line.

Your closest dedicated angling locations will likely be Heart Park Fishing and the Meadowlands Fishery. On the former, carp weighing 20lb or more are known to be numerous in the waters. On the latter, the even more sizable carp are joined by lots of silver fish, and bait boats are permitted.

The other main fishing spot that is up in the air, as it stands, is the Coombe Pool Fishery. Last season, the pools were drained to allow for necessary work. People can still visit most areas of the park, but fishing has been closed. There is yet to be an update for the 2026/27 season, so there’s a chance that it’ll reopen to anglers this summer.

From the middle of June, you’ll be free to fish your local waterways and indulge in the activity that’s only becoming more and more prominent in entertainment and beyond.
