80-year-old Coventry swimmer inviting others to 'take the plunge'

AS people plan to get fitter in the new year, an 80-year-old Coventry swimmer is urging people to ‘take the plunge’ to improve their physical and mental health.

Lorna Simpson first discovered her passion for swimming aged 13 and later went on to pursue a qualification in lifesaving.

Having taken a break from swimming after moving away from Coventry, Lorna was diagnosed with arthritis aged 50, prompting her husband to encourage her to jump back into her beloved sport.

In 2019 she joined the University of Warwick’s sports and wellness hub, despite being nervous to start back up again.

Lorna said: “After such a long break I wasn’t sure how I’d find getting back into the pool, but it’s been amazing. I was diagnosed with arthritis when I was 50 and swimming has been incredible at helping to reduce the symptoms of my arthritis– it’s improved my life hugely!

“I’ve been swimming again for almost 30 years now and it’s one of the best things I could have done – a nice swim in the morning really relaxes my joints and sets me up for a good day ahead.”

“Not only has swimming been great for my physical health but the social side of it has been great for my mental health, too – I’ve made some great friends along the way.

“If you’re considering starting, I’d encourage you to take the plunge and do it, whether you go with someone or on your own, you won’t regret it.”
