THE GILBERT Richards Centre in Coventry celebrated its 40th anniversary with an open day demonstrating the collaborative efforts of Coventry City Council and Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire.

The open day at the Gilbert Richard Craft and Computer Centre, held on April 25, saw the centre’s Age UK volunteers joined by The Lord Mayor of Coventry, Coun Kevin Maton and Coun Dr Kindy Sandhu for a tour of the site.

On the tour, attendees were showcased the range of activities offered, giving members the chance to exhibit the jewellery, woodwork, pottery and textiles made during classes at the centre.

The Lord Mayor discussed online safety with members, taking a particular interest in the centres computer suite.

Tony Richards, the son of the centres patron, Gilbert Richards was also in attendance engaging with staff and volunteers of the centre in Earlsdon.

Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire trustees, Lauren Duncan and Margot Ergot were also joined by chair of trustees Gill Entwistle at the open day.

Diana Slocombe, Age UK centre volunteer said: “For me, volunteering is an opportunity to carry on encouraging people and giving them the opportunity to enjoy their activities.

“I love seeing people come out of their shells, seeing them relax and enjoy themselves is wonderful. That is my reward.”

Age UK Coventry and Warwickshire is a local charity offering services for older people across the city and county including Home Support, Befriending, Information and Advice, and Dementia Day Opportunities.
