THE ALBANY Theatre had a £3.5million transformation and was opened with an event by Lord Mayor Coun Mal Mutton.

Pauline Black and MP Zara Sultana were among the special guests at the event, which showcased the theatre’s upgrades.

Over 450 people had a tour of the venue after the two year redevelopment project.

Coun Mutton unveiled a plaque in recognition of her late husband Coun John Mutton, a great supporter of The Albany Theatre over the years.

Clive Benfield’s had one of the new studios named in his honour representing his unswerving commitment to the theatre.

Known as ‘Mr Coventry’ to his fellow Trustees, Clive’s business acumen was a driving force in guiding the theatre through past, current and future development works.

‘Generate Launch’ showcased different workshops in the new studio spaces and performances on the stage by local community groups in a celebration of the city’s diverse cultural talent.

The event featured performances from Sing for Change, Highlife Project, Elite Dance, Godiva Academy of Performing Arts, Moving Space Theatre, Ankura School of Dance and Impact Steel Band.

Kevin Shaw, chief executive and artistic director, said: “The skills demonstrated at Generate Launch by an incredibly diverse range of talented performers of all ages and backgrounds were extraordinary.

“The Albany is all about inclusivity and the representation of all of Coventry’s communities. Our guests were blown away by what that means on the stage.”

The Trust’s Chair, David Meredith, said people have been working for over 12 years to get to the theatre being established as Covenry’s most accessible community arts venue.

Lord Mayor, Councillor Mutton, added: “I can only thank everyone who has been involved in bringing this project to fruition. The facilities are amazing and I know the Theatre will go from strength to strength.

“These facilities are a great asset for the wider community of Coventry and will allow the creative arts to be enjoyed by all of us, not just a few.

“My late husband, John, would have been so proud to see what has been achieved here. The contribution this theatre makes to the life of our city and the lives of young people, in particular, is invaluable.”
